March News 2020

While each of us are no strangers to personal crisis we are certainly witnesses now to an unprecedented time in our history. In the midst of this global crisis we continue to put our faith and trust in God, the author and perfecter of our faith. The Holy Spirit is the only one who can provide perfect peace during this time, and with that said we have been given the gift of our peaceful warrior baby Ava Ashleigh Hoenig! She was born on March 10th at 7:30AM on the dot, and weighed 7lbs13 oz. After Ava was born our midwife held up the placenta to show us that it actually resembled the “Tree of Life.” This was so amazing because Ava means “Life” and her middle name Ashleigh, named after one of Amy’s sisters, means “Ash Tree.” We did not even think how her name related to the phrase “Tree of Life” and it is a special confirmation of God’s grace and goodness for our precious little one. Amy is doing great too and recovering well!

OTHER IMPORTANT NOTES.

  1. Because of COVID-19, Kenyan borders, like many other countries have been temporarily closed to anybody who is not a resident or a citizen.

  2. We are currently getting Baby Ava’s paperwork all together. Social Security, Birth Certificate, Passport, Etc...

  3. We have received Jonah and Hudson’s dependant passes!

  4. Please continue to pray for missionary Cheri Thompson and Challenge Farm in Kenya. They are dealing with all the the shutdowns, electrical outages, and working with a limited staff right now because of COVID-19.

DO NOT BE AFRAID.

We are praying for each of you as we know this crisis is effecting everyone. People are losing their loved ones, jobs, and so many other things right now are happening.

As the storm rages around us we may be wondering, WHERE ARE YOU JESUS? The disciples had a similar encounter:

Mark 4:35-41

Jesus Calms the Storm

"That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”

He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.

He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?”

They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”

God’s thoughts are certainly above our thoughts and we can not understand His timing, but we have to trust He is working all things for our good. Remember, like he was always with the disciples through the storm He is here with us now, may we have courage and not lose faith!

Revelation 2:3-7

To The Church in Ephesus

"You have persevered and have endured hardships for my name, and have not grown weary. Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken the love you had at first. Consider how far you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first. If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place. But you have this in your favor: You hate the practices of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate. Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who is victorious, I will give the right to eat from the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God."

May we as the body of Christ come together as one to be the LIGHT in the darkness. May we be the SALT to a tasteless world. Holy Spirit guide us like only you can. May we repent and return to you, our first love.

One thing we know we can do during this time is PRAY. Please send us any prayer requests you have and we will be in prayer for you. Thank you for supporting us during this time and always.

It’s funny where life may lead you, especially if you’re a person who feels called to faith.

Cheri Thompson and her husband, Rick, were in Kenya in 1992 when they saw 10 boys being beaten by police for the “crime” of begging for food. One boy was only 3. They knew they had to do something.

By 2001, they’d purchased a farm near the Kipsongo Slum just outside of Kitale, Kenya, and by 2003 they’d taken in their first 10 boys.

“We never planned that this is what we'd do,” said Cheri, about their Challenge Farm, where more than 200 young Kenyans live now.

But before it could even get started, Rick was diagnosed with cancer. Much of his treatment was at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem and that’s where they met Sonny Flowers. He’s the pastor at River Oaks Community Church in Clemmons. Flowers soon realized that his Young Adult Ministry could do great things for the farm – and the farm might help the members of “YAM” deepen their faith.

Not everyone was buying in right away.

“You hear stories of what these kids have gone through before coming to the farm and it’s tragic,” said Sam Walter, a member of River Oaks’ Young Adult Ministry and a FOX8 photojournalist. “How can our lives possibly benefit theirs? What kind of hope can I bring a child who has experienced so much pain and heartbreak?”

Walter and others in the Young Adult Ministry went to Kenya for 10 days to follow that calling and see what they can do. Flowers gets why not everyone would be behind the idea.

“A lot of people say, 'Why are you going to Africa, when there are so many needy children, here?'” he said. “But the worst poverty we have here does not compare to what you see in Africa. And what these kids have been through in their life, from living on the street from when they're 3 years old.”

The children and young adults told Walter and Flowers all about it.

“Others take advantage of you,” said one of the children, named Elizabeth. “You can be raped, you can be abused. You can be beaten by other people or by elder kids in the street.”

“I was thinking that life had just ended for me,” said another child named Veronica, about what it was like to lose her mother and be on the streets begging.

But, even in the short time they are at the Challenge Farm, the Young Adult Ministry program seems to have an effect.

“What's amazing is those kids that you meet, just for those 10 days, they will remember your name,” Flowers said.

World News (Article From May 2019)

Nairobi, Kenya (CNN)Every Sunday morning in an affluent suburb of Nairobi, Kenya, the soaring song of Chinese hymns fills the empty corridors of a Monday-to-Friday office block.

Inside a small makeshift chapel, a kaleidoscopic congregation of Chinese migrants gather to pray. Among them are underwear importers, health workers and operators of the controversial new $3.8 billion Chinese-built railway that slices through Kenya, the country's biggest infrastructure project since independence -- and a sign of China's growing investment and footprint on the continent.

Some have married Kenyans, others have Chinese children who speak Swahili as well as they do Mandarin...

God Ordained Moments

I (Maverick) was recently in a small local coffee shop when I overheard two teenagers talking about missions and one was talking about how she just returned from Africa on a missions trip, which peaked my interest, so I introduced myself and we swapped stories of how God called us each to mission. We were able to encourage and pray for one another. This God ordained moment was a confirmation of what God has been instilling in us lately of how important it is for us to remember that we are on this mission together with other believers! God is a big God -- His purposes will be accomplished among the earth, and He has given us the special privilege to partner with Him in the Great Commission!

With God all things are possible!

50 years ago on this day a man walked on the MOON! How amazing is that. God has given us an astounding intellect to accomplish the seemingly impossible, I heard that even the word impossible says, I'mPossible :) Haha! We were so blown away that through the kindness of others we were able to raise 1000 dollars in our Hope in Jesus T-shirt campaign to go towards our Kenyan Visa Costs and Plane Tickets.

What we are most thrilled about is that all those who wear this T-shirt will be sharing a bit of hope to a desperate and hopeless world! If you still would like a shirt, they are available at:

ALSO WE HAVE AN URGENT PRAYER REQUEST!

We have recently heard from the company processing our Kenyan Work Visas that there is currently a two-week freeze on Visas and all immigration workers are required to meet in Nairobi.

We know God's timing and plans are perfect so would you continue with us in prayer and believing through faith that our Kenyan Work Visas would be approved!

Thank you!  - Mav and Amy

Family Time!

We are excited to be spending some much needed time with family and friends during this transition time.

Sometimes it feels like a dream that we were just in China, but we are excited to announce shortly a great opportunity our family has coming up!

Amy's parents treated us to Disney on Ice in Greensboro, NC and the boys really enjoyed it! Jonah was focused the whole time, while Hudson soldiered through just to the intermission. :)
